Successful Horizons

Successful Horizons is an organization to support administration and scoring of the Inventory of Personal Skills for Achievement, IPSA.  This is a self-administered questioner given to youth ages 10 through 17 answering questions about their beliefs about themselves, their school, their friends, their own strengths and needs in their life at the time they are answering the questions.

A historical, longitudinal and research base is the foundation of these strengths.  Each skill set is compared to other youth their same and sex (male or female).  As youth grow older their skill sets and healthy choices should improve, when it does not then an individual youth’s needs can be identified then remediated.

Unhealthy behaviors are reversed by

1.      Determining who needs remediation

2.      Identifying what skills are needed

3.      Implementing programs to help students, school or communities in need

4.      Post testing to measure the extent of improvements

5.      Longitudinal tracking of progress 1 year, 2 years and 5 years later.

Quote

Today’s institutions focus on academic skills but not the interpersonal and intrapersonal skills needed to succeed today. These same institutions do not focus on identifying those individuals who lack the skills to adapt and thrive in today’s world or to remediate this situation.  Research has advanced to the point that we know what characteristics lead to successful workers, successful parents, healthy adults, healthy life styles and what contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and workers but this knowledge is often not taught or shared outside of higher learning or research.  Our children are tomorrow’s future and if we give them the knowledge and skills they need today then they will have more successful horizons tomorrow.                                                                                                                                                     Melinda Leaseburg, Ph.D.  2000
